You’ve discovered you have a bun in the oven and are probably already using your favorite baby app to track every in utero milestone! Here are some interesting twists to the facts you’re learning along the way.

Months 1-3

“Morning” Sickness

For the majority of women, nausea in the first trimester can be present pretty much all day (and night). It eases up for most by 14 weeks, though for an unfortunate few it may not fully go away until baby is born.

Aversions

You’ve probably heard that many pregnant women can’t stand foods they usually love (like meat or coffee!), but you might not know that you could also experience the opposite. Many women find that they crave foods they have always hated!

Pregnancy Brain

It’s common for women who are pregnant to find they are more forgetful than usual. The reason? The surge of hormones affects the neurons in your brain.

Months 4-6

Linea Nigra

The dark line that stretches from naval to pubic bone usually appears around this time. Many believe the reason is connected to newborns’ poor eyesight. One theory is that the Linea Nigra and your darker nipples help guide your newborn to your breast to nurse.

Fetal Movement

First time moms usually feel first flutters between 16 and 24 weeks. The placenta most commonly attaches to the back of your uterus, but can also attach in the front (anterior). While it is nothing to worry about, it may make it more difficult to feel those first kicks until baby gets a little bigger.

Glucose Test

Most expectant mothers are tested between 24 and 28 weeks for Gestational Diabetes. You have a choice about your medical exams during your prenatal care, so remember to research and ask questions before deciding what’s right for you.

Months 7-9

Stretch Marks

Your skin is stretching like never before, and could leave behind some evidence. While there are many “remedies” for removing those lines, the truth is that most of it is just genetics. Either way, it’s still a good idea to moisturize your growing skin.

Nesting

Many women find that as they near the end of their pregnancy, they have the urge to organize and clean. However, it is just as normal to never have those feelings at all. Whichever side you fall on, you’ll be as ready as you need to be when baby finally arrives.

Natural Labor Induction

While everyone may have an opinion on how you can “get that baby out,” the only scientifically proven method of natural induction is nipple stimulation. And remember, the average first time mom goes 8 days over her due date.

Whether your pregnancy feels like a walk in the park or a mountain climb, you will be sure to experience relief and joy when you have your baby in your arms. Enjoy the journey and know that the best is just ahead!
