Life can be stressful even when you’re not pregnant. But throw into the mix that you now have to healthily grow a baby, prepare for delivery, and plan for life postpartum, and your to-do list can add up fast. All of this makes it a bit ironic that, now more than ever, it’s important to stay calm and anxiety-free. Let these tips help you lighten the load.
Yoga and Meditation
Yoga provides an almost infinite benefit to both body and mind. Not only does it work wonders lowering your stress level, it builds your muscle strength and flexibility which helps prepare you for a smoother labor and delivery. The controlled breathing practice can also be particularly useful in labor.
Rest
This time in your life may feel like you have more to do than ever before. However, your body and mind have also never needed more rest! Build a new habit of getting to bed early, and wind down with something relaxing like a book or soft music to promote a more restful sleep. Take five-minute mental breaks throughout the day to make sure you’re not pushing yourself too hard.
Plan Ahead
One of the biggest ways to help manage stress is to plan ahead. If you don’t already have one, buy a planner and use it to record your appointments and reminders for the week. Make a list of the things you’d like to accomplish in preparation for the baby, and come up with weekly and monthly goals to help you complete them. When you know in advance what to focus on each week, you’re less likely to become overwhelmed and more able to efficiently complete tasks.
Say No
Learning to lighten your schedule is a habit that will benefit you in pregnancy and into the newborn days. You may not be able to take on as much as you once could, and that’s perfectly fine. Allow yourself flexibility to do what is necessary, but be gracious enough to be okay with not doing it all. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help.
Time for Yourself
Spend designated time doing something you enjoy. This will not only help maintain stress levels, but can also be great for bonding time between you and baby. Try to keep your to-do list and your anxieties off of your mind during this time. Once you’ve been able to decompress, you will feel refreshed and ready to keep moving toward your goals.
There will always be more chores to do, but soon your baby will be in your arms and all that will matter is the love that you share!
